Complementing dynamic production with individually developed microservices to simplify the management of calculation rules
DER Touristik was one of the first dynamically packaging tour operators to introduce the new product version of Peakwork. The standard software offers a sophisticated pricing engine that is programmed with comprehensive business rules and can map a variety of calculation and pricing models. However, managing these business rules is not part of the solution. Grothe Technology was commissioned to build in the missing functionality. Our task was to develop a microservice for creating, simulating, and administering the calculation rules, as well as integrating the tourist tax.

Our software development in detail
After a thorough analysis, we designed a calculation service that exactly meets DER Touristik’s individual requirements. It is operated in the Microsoft Azure cloud and allows even the most complex calculation rules to be created and their results to be simulated via an easy-to-use interface. The service also provides the interfaces for integration into automated rules optimisation and can automatically import rules data into the Peakwork systems.
Example: tourist tax
In many countries, a tourist tax is levied in addition to the accommodation price, which the guest must pay directly on site. It poses great challenges for both travel providers and price comparison systems, as it must be displayed in the order summary and booking process for reasons of competition law. There are a wide range of rules for calculating the tourist tax. Registering these, constantly managing them and adjusting them if necessary is a complex process. Our new calculation service also provides valuable services here!
Conclusion
Thanks to the calculation service developed by Grothe Technology, the DER Touristik team will be spared from time-consuming manual work in the future. Any calculation rule, however complex, is now created and managed via an efficient and user-friendly interface. Changes are delivered quickly and efficiently from the production systems to the distribution channels. This turned what is at first sight a bothersome requirement into a clear competitive edge for DER Touristik.
