Low-risk, step-by-step modernisation of the product information system through individually developed microservices
The medium-sized tour operator Studiosus has been using its own product information system for years in the production of travel documents, B2B and B2C sales platforms, as well as for its own e-commerce websites. It provides aggregated content, price, and availability data for catalogue production and e-commerce sales. The XML structure outputted by the system is very well thought out and has proven itself. New web applications rely on the existing interfaces.
In the environment of the COBOL-based reservation system, there were functional requirements that needed to be implemented with modern technologies such as microservices in order to achieve cloud readiness, among other things. Grothe Technology was brought on board for this purpose. The challenge was to modernise the product information system step by step and without any risks.

Our software development in detail
We extracted individual functional blocks from the monolithic legacy system and migrated them into individually developed microservices. The microservices communicate directly with the COBOL host system via REST interfaces and deliver data to the Elast icsearch cluster, which is connected upstream of the production system. As a result, data can be brought to the sales frontends faster and without detours.
Conclusion
By extracting individual business objects and migrating them to microservices, we were able to eliminate innovation backlogs step by step and successfully transform the monolithic legacy system. Grothe Technology has thus laid the foundation for the successful modernisation of the Studiosus product information system. In the future, further areas can be optimised in a targeted manner and without notable risk, while the proven application can remain in place.
